Workplace regulators in California are drafting an emergency rule to address an epidemic of silicosis — a deadly, preventable lung disease — among fabricators of artificial-stone countertops.
One of the men featured in the stories, Juan Gonzalez Morin, died last month. He had just turned 37.
Since 2019, the California Department of Public Health has identified 69 cases of silicosis among fabrication workers — “likely an underestimate,”

Things To Avoid On Your Granite Countertops
There are many ways you can keep your countertops safe from being stained or from being damaged. Like any other countertops, your granite countertops may be strong as a brick, but there are many ways you can erode the surface of this stone and make it wear down. There are many ways you can protect your home from damage, and the first thing you will want to learn about is things that you should avoid placing on your granite directly. There are combinations of food and chemicals that can wear down the colour of your granite, they also have the potential to eat away at your stone, leaving you with a rough surface.
You will want to avoid putting raw meat directly on your granite counters;. However, your granite counters are micro-sealed to prevent mycobacteria from working their way into the surface of the stone. Would you really want to risk it? Imagine after you drop raw meat on your counter, micro bacteria work their way to the surface affecting every food which touches the countertops. You will have more of a chance of becoming serey ill, and there is a chance you may even get salmonella. You want to avoid placing acidic items on your countertops; this includes citrus fruits, soft drinks and nail polish.
You will want to clean spills as fast as you can; although spills are inevitable and they happen almost every time, there's no way that you couldn't fix your countertops with a little bit of hot water and soap. You will want to avoid placing knives directly on top of your countertops, and this is because you do not want to knick the stone or make an indent in the countertop. If you are ever going to cut vegetables or fruits, make sure to place a cutting board underneath the knife. You should never directly cut foods on your countertop, you never know when your hand will slip and you could injure yourself.
You have the chance to make sure your countertops are staying safe from different foods and chemicals. You may have never known that raw meat can let micro bacteria sit in the surface of your granite up until now, and you probably never knew that you should be careful when carrying pop around your granite stone. If you are looking for kitchen countertops in Sudbury and Northbay, make sure to contact Nova Stone.
